Again the Lord of light and life
Awakes the kindling ray,
Dispels the darkness of the night,
And pours increasing day.

Oh, what a night was that, which wrapt
A sinful world in gloom!
Oh, what a sun, which broke, this day,
Triumphant from the tomb!

The pow’rs of darkness league in vain,
To bind our Lord in death;
He shook their hindrance, when He fell,
By His expiring breath.

And now His conq’ring chariot wheels
Ascend the lofty skies;
Broken beneath His pow’rful cross,
Death’s iron sceptre lies.
